[Movie] Hasee Toh Phasee

The movie opens with a bunch of people screaming and trying to open a door in a Chawl in mumbai, and a man comes up the staircase and is told it is his daughter who did the prank. He calls her aside, doesnt chide or scold her but tells her to open the door and finish what she started and they high 5. On the other hand there is another family, the dad is a cop and his 2nd son Nikhil [Siddharth Malhotra] is a naughty kid- who they lock in a room and go to watch a movie, but he doesnt stay locked in, he is out and watching the movie from the other side of the screen in no time.

Producers: Vikas Bahl, Hiroo Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar
Production companies: Dharma Productions, Phantom Productions
Cast: Parineeti Chopra,Sidharth Malhotra,Adah Sharma

Hasee Toh Phasee is quite the entertainer, it was such a feel good movie that we walked out of the theater smiling, recollecting the quirky moments.  Coming back to the movie, the 1st time Nikhil and Meetha [Parineeti Chopra] meet is when Nikhil is passing by a house when he spots a tomboyish girl trying to escape through the barbed wires. He helps her escape and as she is fleeing the place, she says "Socho, mein idea hoti aur tum technology, humari patang kya mast udti na?”

Now, the main plot of the movie is not a new one, it is about a guy and girl all set to get married, when the guy falls in love with another girl in the process only to go after her on his wedding day. But the way it has been taken, the approach, the characters - that is what sets this movie apart.

Meetha is a daddy's girl [daddy's role played by Manoj Joshi], a girl who runs away because she dint get what she wanted from her dad. Her uncle is constantly yelling at her [she has short hair, wears T-shirt and trousers, is spoilt, too independent, etc etc]. She hails from a traditional Gujarati family that doesnt understand her, nor do they encourage her brilliance.  She disappears on the eve of her oldest sister's marriage only to reappear after 7 years for her 2nd sister's wedding. Infact, Karishma (Adah Sharma), her sister invites her for the wedding  but introduces her as a guest to Nikhil. It is only later that he discovers the relation, the background and Meetha as a person.

The story is all about Nikhil and Karishma's wedding, the families preparing for it, Nikhil perpetually in need o money, Karishma constantly angry with him, and the rest of the family adding to the chaos in their own little way. Nikhil and Karishma have had a crazy relationship, she has threatened to break it off numerous times, but he holds on to the relationship saying "I know her, I love her, who is to say the next girl will be the perfect one?"

Meetha is an oddball, she has the wildest twitches and habits, she speaks a million words a second, she drinks gallons of water and popped a dozen pills periodically. Nikhil ends up picking her up, finding her accomodation, retrieving her from the dump and putting her up at his house, driving her around, and various other adventures. During these times he learns about her, realises she is not a bad cookie, but just a misunderstood cookie. And as they discover each other, romance blossoms. On the evening of a family gathering, Meetha tags along with Nikhil for she wants to meet her dad [ hasnt seen him in 7yrs] but is told he is angry and might have another heart attack, and so he whisks her away. But then the car breaks down, and she instantly solves the issue. That evening, she shares her entire life story with Nikhil, showing off the ball that bounces like crazy, that could one day provide power for an entire apartment complex.

Her stares, quirks, sharp dialogues, her twinkling eyes, sudden bursts of chinese, tooth paste eating, chocolate stealing habits are just amazing. Infact, she is the highlight of the movie and Parineeti has acted brilliantly, essaying the role to the dot.  Nikhil is so drawn to her that by the end of the movie he is all set to help her find the money she needs even though it is not the acceptable path. And as expected, the movie does end with a happy ending.

It is a must watch for anyone who needs a good laugh, or wants to hold on to the belief that love does exist. Such a rib tickling, sweet, endearing, feel good, warm fuzzy movie that was.  And then ofcourse, Siddharth looks good, so does Parineeti [there is also certain cuteness in her]

Overal rating - 4.5/5 [ the .5 less because some scenes I felt were unnecessary, just as some characters were...]

[Movie] Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi

Last weekend I watched yet another Malayalam movie, this time a movie with a long title, but one that had a beautiful meaning. It was Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi [English: Blue Skies, Green Waters, Red Earth]

Directed and co-produced by Sameer Thahir
Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Wayne, Surja Bala Hijam,Ena Saha, Dhritiman Chatterjee,Joy Mathew,Pearle Maaney, Paloma Monappa and Avantika to name a few. But the main stars are Dulquer and Sunny

Over the past few months, I must have seen close to 10 Malayalam movies and I have discovered they are quite good. Especially since I began understanding the language, I looked forward to watching more of these flicks. Sunday morning 10am show at PVR was what was on the agenda. I reached the theater around 9.45, grabbed a sandwich & cold coffee at CCD and got ready to watch the movie.

The story is losely based on 2 college guys who head out on a road trip on their bikes. Destination: unkown. Along the journey, Kasi [Dulquer] decides to head over to Nagaland in search of the girl of his dreams, and Sunny joins him on the mission. At every stage, they meet interesting people, come across challenges, are helped by random strangers, leave with lessons learnt from people of small villages, and there is a spark every now and then with the girl in the town they camp in. There is quite a bit of drama, a tinge of humour and a lot of life's valuable lessons in this movie. It basically goes to show that everybody we meet has something to teach us. All we need is an open mind to absorb these points..

The one thing that captured my heart in this movie was the cinematography by Gireesh Gangadharan. SImply outstanding. Even though the movie feels long, he kept me glued in with the sights and sounds captured so beautifully. I have never seen our country look so gorgeous and it left me wanting to travel and explore all these places. From the beaches of Puri, to the hills of the North East, the wide highway in the middle of nowhere flanked by red mountains, the visual were breath taking to say the least.  How can i forget the scene where a group of riders help them and take them with the group to Puri. Oh what a sight. Men on bikes- heart stopping !! :D

The songs and background score was lovely. It blended perfectly with the rhythm of the movie. The songs that stood out were Doore Doore and Thaazhvaaram. The Manipuri actress is so delicate, while Gauri from the small village near Calcutta comes across strong willed, and the surfer chick in Puri the caring one.  But the one who stole the show has to be Dulquer-  He moves between the various roles with ease and grace, be it the playful college kid, the SFI activist protesting against commercialization  the son , the uncle who dotes on his niece and above all, the confused youngster  in search of his goal...

Overall rating: 4.75/5 [had it been half hour shorter, would have been crisper]

[Book] My Brother's Wedding by Andaleeb Wajid

I came to know of Andaleeb Wajid through a friend when he sent me her book to read & review- Blinkers off. Since then we have been in touch through Facebook and Twitter and so it was nice to meet this lively author when she launched her new book "My Brothers' wedding" at Crossword Bookstore in Chennai. It was a fun filled evening where we got to interact with her on a personal level, and hear tales of how she writes, where she got the inspiration for the book from and what else is in store from her treasure chest....

Book Name: My Brother's Wedding
Author: Andaleeb Wajid
Publisher : Rupa Books
ISBN : 978-8-1291-2399-2
Genre: Fiction: Romance, family drama, chic-lit [call it what you want, it is a very breezy light read]
Pages: 264
Price: Rs 295/-

My Brother's Wedding is a book based on the chaos called 'wedding in the family".  But it goes beyond the groom and his family, there is quite a bit of craziness connecting people beyond the immediate family members. It has a splash of drama, a generous amount of spice and romance as well.  It is a book that is as close to reality as you will get~!!

I for one hate weddings. Why? To me weddings are synonymous with tempers flaring, craziness bursting everywhere, expenses sky rocketing and unnecessary squabbles coming into the scene. Weddings according to me should be simple sweet affairs, where the focus remains on the bride and groom, but instead it is all about who gives/receives what gifts, the sudden chaos within the house related to other members, an illness, god forbid a death, how elaborate the menu is, who has been invited, what are the return gifts and what not... These paint quite a disturbing image right, but then that is the reality..

“My Brother’s Wedding” opens with Saba’s blog. All of 19 years Saba starts an anonymous blog, a platform where she can vent, rant and share.  She gives alphabets as nicknames for her characters- her sis, her best friend, her cousin who she has a huge crush on, other friends and so on. The book actually has 2 parallels to it- one the main wedding related chaos and other is saba's blog.  The entire plot is set in Bangalore and revolves around how this wedding is planned and its impact on Saba's life.

Andaleeb takes the readers through a typical Muslim household and the wedding preparations.  It is also about how families maintain a brave face when meeting others but within the four walls their lives are falling apart. There is the sister who believes her husband is possessed, a Djinn, the guy who lusts after Saba's sister at the wedding who secretly meets Saba and ultimately how all the pieces of the puzzle fall into the place and comes to a happy ending or not.. ;o)
It took me all of 3 hours to read, the last half hour dragged on, only because I wasn't ready to be done with the book yet. :-) It was such a delightful simple breezy read, ideal for anyone who wants a light book.
For those who want to buy the book, pick up your copy from Flipkart or the nearest book store
Andaleeb also has another book ready to be launched in a month or so-->  More than Just Biryani  and she has started a blog which was about recipes but is also about this book of hers..

Scammed by Anonymous

Book: Scammed

Published by Grey Oak/Westland

Pages: 182 pages

When i picked up this book, i read the brief synopsis and wondered what it would be about. But i must tell you, the author had me in for a surprise, as there was quite a bit of twist and turn within the 1st few pages.

The protagonist of Scammed is Hitesh Shah, who is an accountant and quite vexed with his current job. Like every other hard working person, he waits patiently for that glorious moment, when his boss, also a friend Sahil will call him into his office for the appraisal and offer him a promotion. Alas, it is not to be so. he discovers the promotion has gone to another woman in the office, who is much less deserving. Unable to take a decision, and yielding into his boss's offer that 6 months down the road Hitesh will be promoted, he goes on with his day, being miserable. Working on the accounts of a client, he discovers there is quite a bit of muck and underhand jobs going on, added to the fact that the partner assigned for the project Sandra is most of the time missing.

Through the client, he discovers Sandra has been having illicit affairs under the pretense of being ill. Fed up with people around him, Hitesh decides to complete the assignment for Supreme Motors and look for something better. He goes home to a mother who is worried about him and always trying to hook him up with some girl or the other, and a father who is never happy and always looking for a quarrel, disagreement.

Hitesh approaches the client, Venugopal Reddy with the findings of the audit and also with a proposal. Venugopal is quite a sleazy businessman who also has quite a bit of Political connections. This is also when Hitesh reconnects with his School sweetheart Sushma, they go around, go out, he buys her fancy things, and even asks her to marry him. Around this time, Venugopal fires and takes into action all those who had been cheating him, and ropes in Hitesh to launch the Rental car company, which comes as a much deserved break for Hitesh, who goes on to quit his job at Smith & Donald.

Supreme Motors does well, infact the company grows beyond dreams, giving Hitesh a new lease on life. However, like a stack of playing cards, things start falling apart. Complaints pour in from Franchisees, people are talking about abusive drivers, franchisees approved without Hitesh's go ahead and just about everything else one can dream of. Amidst all this, Sushma breaks up with him saying she has a flourishing career ahead of her.

One morning, Hitesh is woken up and told that one of the members of Supreme Motors Mohan Babu has committed a murder and things are going from bad to worse for the company. Like many Bollywood movies, people run, some disappear, and others are blamed for no fault of theirs. If you have seen/read Pelican Brief, you will know what am talking about. With the help of Payal and another employee, Hitesh goes into hiding, just till things settle down. Angry and upset, he tries to figure out a way to solve the mess that has unfolded. Sushma and Sandra file case on Hitesh saying he abused and sexually harassed them.

With no other option, Hitesh runs from town to town with no one but Payal by his side. He gradually falls in love with her, realises how valuable she has been and goes on to marry her! With the help of the Chief Minister, he clears his name, and brings out all the trash to open, killing the chance that all the crooks had of instigating him and getting away scott free.

The book was quite engaging, i read it in one go and quite enjoyed the pace!! Yes, it did feel filmy, but i must give it to the author for maintaining pace, and keeping it real!!

The Saiyuki Trio

It was one of those emails listing down the events of the day across Chennai. I always skim through them, and delete the mail. But last evening, for no reason, the words "Saiyuki Trio" caught my attention. I read on to discover it was a concert to be held at Alliance Francaise at 7pm and it was open to all. The thought then faded away as i got busy with work and other activities. Around 6.45 i suddenly remembered "Saiyuki Trio", and made a dash to get to the venue. Since it was short walk from home i wasnt too worried!!

But it was the very evening when Madam Chief Minister, Jayalalitha had decided to grace a Christmas Celebration happening near home. And the streets looked like the entire city had been kicked out of their homes, there were people everywhere, along the bridge, on the street, up and down the staircases and just about everywhere. Resembled an army of ants crawling across a piece of cake, trying to sneak in a nibble.

So, i was there at the Edouard Michelin Auditorium on the top floor, only to hear the MC announce "we are running a bit behind schedule as many are stuck across town due to unavoidable circumstances [read as JJ's visit across town]...  So, i sat there and waited .. waited... and finally, 7.20pm the trio came onto the stage set for them.

[L to R]Prabhu Edouard, Nguyen le and Meiko Miyazaki...

It was one & half hours of beautiful  soulful music.. Each piece was unique, and it was a different kind of an experience... There was a piece they performed called "Sangamam" [which literally translates to Confluence, coming together] that had been composed by Prabhu....

Sangam.. Sangeetham..Sabdam..Santhosham..
Sangam... Ananda Sangam... [was how the verse went]

The Trio from various corners of the world have come together, and the music that was born out of their confluence was truly divine.....

The Trio were-
Mieko Miyazaki from Japan who played the Koto, a large String instrument with such ease. She has been playing this since the age of 9 and has won many accolades back in Japan... A petite lady, she also had a voice that had us all mesmerised....

Nguyen Le, born in Paris to Vietnamese parents played the Guitar... He is renowned for the album Purple that was released celebrating Jimi Hendrix's music...

and finally, our very own Prabhu Edouard who hails from Trichy, but has made France his home [been there since 1975] who plays the Tabla among other similar instruments.. He also plays with Hindustani flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia. He had the audience zapped, chanting, singing, clapping and ofcourse laughing away with his quirky comments...

 The Koto [Japanese instrument]

There was this one piece composed by Mieko which she narrated as a story...

"Many many years ago, there was only One God.. he then created two gods- a man god Isimagi, and a woman Isimani....

One day the husband looked at his wife and asked her "My Darling, how is your body?"
She replied "My darling, my body is good, but i feel something missing"
He then told her "My darling, but i have something too much in my body, i will give you some of it to make that something missing go away"

[now, we all knew what she was talking about and there were a few surprised gasps and chuckles among the audience..... ]

And then Mieko blushed and told us how "The husband gave his wife some of the too much that he had and then she made many babies, who are believed to be the islands of Japan"

During the course of the song, there was a section where Prabhu and Mieko belted out words and sounds that described the scene going on between the husband and wife.... It was amazing at how they were able to bring out such strong feelings through simple words and chants....

Prabhu then took the mic, and made light of the performance that had just happened saying He and Meiko were just artists, their relationshop was purely professional and that after the show he would go home to his wife and she to a different hotel... hahah..fun moments during the concert........

Here is one of the pieces they performed- Sweet Ganesha....

You can listen to some pieces here and some of their other performances here

The Edouard Michelin Auditorium is a fairly small one, but i have seen it go through transformation over the years, now there is Air conditioning, nice plush seats have replaced plastic chairs and the ramp outside replaced with stairs, a nice door and an overall good feel. Oh, they have also installed an Elevator...

[Theater] 39 steps

Richard Hannay meets this gorgeous woman who out of nowhere pulls out a gun and shoots into the air during a theater performance. She then invites herself over to his house, following which she gets murdered. A murder that Richard is caught into for no fault of his, a series of chaos, clumsiness, and characters is what 39 steps is all about.
Today, got an opportunity to watch the preview show of 39 steps by Evam and Radaan.  Dint have to do anything, dint have to pay anything, went watched gave my feedback and got back!!

Based on the movie 39 steps by Alfred hitchcock,  which was in turn loosely based on the adventure novel The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan.this play went on for over an hour and had us in splits, gaping, wondering and wondering how fine tuned the final show going to be.

4 actors play more than 10 characters.. switching between roles in seconds, alternating between being a man and a woman, moving the furniture on the stage around...

Agreed, there were a few things that could be tweaked, could have been made better, but the team has over 2weeks to fine tune and am sure by the time they perform to the audience, it will be near perfect!!

[movie] The Good the bad the Ugly..

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a movie made in 1966, that i watched sometime in the 80s but remember vividly till date....

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a movie with a catchy theme song, that used to be my ring tone, that i still trip on....

Recently discovered The Good, the Bad and the Ugly theme song performed by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and it is sooo amazing, been listening to it everyday , multiple times!!

Its amazing how a movie from decades ago is fresh and cherished, but there are some that i watched few days ago, that left no mark!!

[Movie] The Fall

Couple of days back, my sis and i went to the DVD store and raided it clean!!! was fun!! Thanks to all the work, and projects flowing in, i've not been to a theater in over 2weeks... so decided this was the best way of destressing~!! :) One of the movies i brought home was THE FALL by Tarsem Singh
The movie is set in 1915- 1920 at a hospital in Los Angeles, where a dejected stuntman,Roy (Lee Pace) is recovering from a mishap that has left him bed ridden. Scampering around the hospital is Alexandria (Cantinca Untaru), an adorable girl with a broken arm, who carries around a box that has her treasures in it. She speaks English with a bit of an accent and isnt really fluent in it, which adds to her character.

She meanders into Roy's room one day, and Roy, upon hearing her name, tells her about Alexander the Great. She is so entranced by his yarn-spinning that she wants to hear more from this mysterious man.... Roy goes along....

From then on, every morning Alexandra makes her way to Roy's room, and he starts to weave a tale of old-fashioned adventure. The story is about a band of five men from all over the globe who are united by their hatred of an evil man named Governor Odious. They are: a former black slave (Marcus Wesley), an Indian man (Jeetu Verma), an Italian explosives expert (Robin Smith), a masked bandit [who finally turns out to be Roy himself] and, finally, err, ummm.. Charles Darwin (Leo Bill), accompanied by a monkey that gives him advice from within the satchel in which he is carried (and the monkey is always right)

The five revenge-seekers, each wearing costumes of a different predominant color, travel the world to reach Gov. Odious, guided at one point by a babbling mystic warrior (Julian Bleach) who comes out of a burning tree(amazing visuals)....
The masked bandit's tiff with Odious is that Odious killed his brother[Blue bandit]. In real life, the Odious stole Roy's girlfriend[which is why Roy is so depressed and feeling suicidal]. In between the story, Roy and Alexandra's lives are also woven in... Roy tells Alexandria he is unable to sleep and that he wants her to get him some MORPHINE [ she reads it as M O R P H I N 3 :)], and obliges since he says only when she gets it for him will he resume.... the story goes on till finally Alexandra is part of the tale, and ends up rescuing Roy..... :)
"you always stop at the same part, when it's very beautiful" - a dialogue Alexandra says everytime Roy stops the story.....
Darwin--- "Shoot, you animals. They'll pay you well for Darwin's hide."
The settings in which the story unfolds are mind blowing.... fascinating.... and most parts have been shot in india.. If one has seen Jodhaa Akbhar, you will know what am talking about... all the forts, palaces that come in that movie are here! except they look grander and majestic!!
A lovely warm movie that left me feeling "wow" and "am glad i picked this up".. yes, there are parts that are unbelievable... but hey, it is just a fable that Roy is creating !!!

Hockey rules.. Chak de...

I had been talking to a friend of mine about this movie and we wanted to go for the 1st day 1st show, and then forgot about it till Aug 10th , wen this friend's mom, also a good friend of mine said that she is trying for tickets for the next day and i jumped and said i wanna come too.. crossed all fingers and toes hoping for ticket, and got it..yipeee.. we were to go on sat, Aug 11th for the 10pm show.. told her i'll stay over at her place and get back home sunday morn..

The day wore on and it was time to leave for the theater... was excited, not cos i am a major SRK fan but jus the fact that i was gonna watch this movie, with friends.... movie started late, we were the 1st few to enter the theater, this friend Preethy stood right outside the door and got in first, hehehe,, she is a crazy SRK fan.... :)
Oh,and then the movie dint begin right away.. there was a surprise for us , the screen lit up, and the words "will everyone pls stand up" popped on, and we were wondering what was going on.. then came the medley of singers singing Jana Gana mana... we all promptly stood up in respect.... and then once that was over, it was straight on to the movie...

Chak De.... directed by Shimit Amin was the director's second venture after Ab Tak Chhappan which was produced by Ram Gopal Varma.

This movie is said to be kinda ased on true story of Indian Hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi. Negi was the unfortunate goalkeeper of the Indian Hockey Team which lost 7-1 to Pakistan in Asian Games Hockey Final, back in 1982. For no fault of his, he was said to be the sole reason for the team's lose... This movie has SRK, who plays the role of Kabir Khan, a hockey player who quits cos he was blamed and called a TRAITOR shaking hands with a Paki player after losing the match... and how he makes a come back after 7yrs and takes on the National Womens hockey team ....

The women players, chosen from states all over India, are a fun lot, including a tomboy (Chitrashi Rawat) whose father fears she will never marry who places the bundle given by her mom as a way of reserving the bed, and has a temper to match; a forward Preeti
Sabarwal(Sagarika Ghatge) who reaches late for the 1st day and finally manages to hold her place in the team, whose boyfriend, a cricket superstar, wants her to quit the team and live in his shadow; a newlywed goalie and captain of the team Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malavade) whose in-laws expect her to stay at home; and a haughty, seasoned player Bindia (Shilpa Shukla) who needles the coach and tries getting her own way till she realises SRK is not so bad after all. Not to forget the Punju girl who has a mean temper, picks a fight with everyone and steals the movie, Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) ..

From the minute the girls meet SRK till the last goal, the movie is gripping and its almost like watching a live FIFA world cup match live.. The thrill and nail biting finish, to the unpredictable moves is amazing... Having realised that his team does not need hockey skills, but team spirit SRK goes about getting them to act as a team and the absolutely wonderfully directed scene is the one at McDonalds, the lunch hosted by SRK the day he quits the team cos the girls dont like him.
When leering boys at a McDonald’s harass the girls, a girls-against-boys melee erupts, but SRK doesn’t interfere, knowing the team will prevail — and find its spirit. From there, it’s on to the women’s hockey championships in Australia winning over trillion battles, getting over personal differences and coming together as one... :)

The best part about the movie was it was off beat, different from the usual mushy romantic love story, no masala, no fights, no silly side track comedy scenes that make you want to scream.. the Soundtrack is pretty decent, ofcourse the title track by Sukwinder singh has us all tapping our feet, the way the song has been featured is brilliant... a very patriotic movie, that is all about INDIA, togetherness and about how anything can be accomplished if we come together.. this movie is a must watch for all..

So, go on.. have a good time... am sure you will walk out humming Chak de..... chak de india....
